Last weekend’s Herald poll showed that more than half of us want to restore the right of teachers to beat our children.
We shouldn’t be surprised by the result. People in general are fond of simple solutions to complex problems and there’s nothing quite as simple as violence. In fact I suspect that some of us get considerable satisfaction from it
Bringing back the cane would make some teachers feel quite happy. In fact, supporters of the idea claim it has benefits other than just providing satisfaction for teachers. Their belief is that corporal punishment is good for kids. That’s a belief, however, that as far as I’m concerned, still remains unproven.
